The Department of French, Hispanic and Italian Studies offers programs in Spanish leading to the degree of Bachelor of Arts, and programs in Hispanic Studies leading to the degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy.
The Spanish Program offers a variety of courses in Spanish language at all levels, and in Hispanic literature, culture, and civilization. Language courses focus on the development of oral, grammar, writing, communicative and intercultural skills, while literature and culture courses help develop linguistic, critical thinking, and analytical skills.

Major in Spanish
Students who complete this program will achieve at least B2 proficiency in Spanish based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). B2 proficiency is equivalent to the successful completion of SPAN_V 402 or a course of an equivalent level.
The foundation of the Major in Spanish is our Spanish language courses from SPAN_V 101 through SPAN_V 203 and SPAN_V 221 an introductory literature course.
Students with prior knowledge of Spanish can complete a language assessment with the Department advisor. Prior to registration in SPAN_V courses, students are encouraged to review the Spanish Placement Guidelines and take the Language Placement Questionnaire to determine their entry level.
Lower-Level Requirements (Up to 15 credits1)
- 6 credits of SPAN_V 101 and 102, or 3 credits of SPAN_V 103
- 6 credits of SPAN_V 201 and 202, or 3 credits of SPAN_V 203
- 3 credits of SPAN_V 221 or 3 credits of RMST_V 2712
1The required number of lower-level credits will change if a student demonstrates the required proficiency level via a placement test or chooses to take the intensive courses SPAN_V 103 and 203, which are designed for students with prior experience in Spanish or other Romance languages. Students must take either SPAN_V 101 and 102 (6 credits total) or SPAN_V 103 (3 credits intensive), and SPAN_V 201 and 202 (6 credits total) or SPAN_V 203 (3 credit intensive).
2 It is highly recommended that students who opt to take RMST_V 271 instead of SPAN_V 221, also take SPAN_V 210.
Upper-Level Requirements (30 credits)
Core Courses: Up to 12 credits3
- 6 credits of SPAN_V 301 and SPAN_V 302, or 3 credits of SPAN_V 3033
- 6 credits of SPAN_V 310 and SPAN_V 320
3 Native or near-native speakers may be exempted from SPAN_V 301, 302, 303, however, they must replace 3 or 6 credits from the Cluster Courses. For instance, students who take SPAN_V 303 need to take an additional 3 credits from the Cluster Courses.

Minor in Spanish
