The Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences degree requires successful completion of the prescribed curriculum in Years One through Four as described in the tables below. The program can be completed through three program options: Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences; B.P.Sc. Experiential Option (Research or Practicum); or B.P.Sc. Experiential Option with Honours. 

All students, regardless of their degree option, must complete the following Year One to Year Three mandatory courses, as listed below. The B.P.Sc. Experiential Option with Honours (B.P.Sc. (Hons)) degree option requires additional credits in Year Three and Year Four as described in the “B.P.Sc. Experiential Option with Honours” section below.

1 Due to the direct impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the B.P.Sc. curriculum, a student who was admitted into Year One of the B.P.Sc. Program in the 2020/2021 academic year is granted the opportunity to complete their Year One and Year Two (100-/200-level) required Chemistry courses before they enter into Year Four of the program. Please refer to the Department of Chemistry’s COVID impact on CHEM courses page for the latest updates regarding chemistry courses.

  • a. CHEM_V 110 and 115 may substitute for CHEM_V 111. CHEM_V 120 and CHEM_V 115 may substitute for CHEM_V 121.
  • b. CHEM_V 130 and CHEM_V 135 may substitute for CHEM_V 123.
  • c. CHEM_V 210 and 215 may substitute for CHEM_V 211.
 
2 BIOL_V 300 may be substituted for students who meet the prerequisite requirements.
3 Students who declare Honours may take an additional 3 upper-level credits of electives (from courses numbered 300 or above) in Year Three.

Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences Option

This degree option is also referred to as the “Course-based” option and serves as the default option for the B.P.S.c program. Students who do not apply for either of the other two degree options are automatically placed in this degree option. In addition to the successful completion of the Year One to Year Three courses listed in the table above, students choosing this degree option must complete the following Year Four-degree requirements:

1 No more than 12 credits of electives may be taken outside of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences for credit towards B.P.Sc. degree option in Year Four. All Year Four elective credits must come from upper-level credits.  

Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Experiential Option

Students must apply for the B.P.Sc. Experiential Option in Year Three. Students applying for Research or Practicum do not have to simultaneously apply for Honours.

B.P.Sc. Experiential Option Research

The B.P.Sc. Experiential Option Research provides a research experience equivalent to one full-time term of work on a defined research project in an area of pharmaceutical research. The knowledge gained is intended to strengthen the student’s applied skills for their future career in academic or industry settings to the national and international standards. Direct supervision from a Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences faculty member is required, although co-supervision with a researcher from another Faculty is allowed, upon approval from the PHAR_V 485 Course Coordinator.

B.P.Sc. Experiential Option – Practicum

The B.P.Sc. Experiential Option – Practicum provides practicum experience equivalent to one full-time term of work in an area of the pharmaceutical industry. Students will learn the skills required to be a functional member in the pharmaceutical industry. The knowledge gained is intended to strengthen the student’s applied skills for their future career in industry settings. Direct supervision by a faculty-approved industry partner is required.

Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Experiential Option with Honours 

Students may apply for the B.P.Sc. Experiential Option with Honours in Year Three. In addition to the Year One and Year Three program electives, Honours students are also required to complete 9 upper-level elective credits (from courses numbered 300 or above), in addition to PHAR_V 485 Research Project and PHAR_V 491 Honours Thesis. Students are to take 3 of these 9 electives in Year Three. The B.P.Sc. Experiential Option with Honours is designed for students who wish to take part in advanced research and study and may lead to direct entry into advanced graduate programs (e.g., Ph.D.). 

Students eligible for Honours must maintain a minimum of 80% in all UBC courses taken as part of the B.P.Sc. degree. The designation requires the successful completion of an honours thesis.

Credit/D/Fail Grading

Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences students are not permitted to take any credits under the Credit/D/Fail grading scheme. All courses counted towards completion of the B.P.Sc. degree must be attempted under the normal grading scheme for the course. Choosing the wrong grading scheme may result in the need to take extra courses to complete degree requirements.
