Minor in Writing and Communication
The Minor in Writing and Communication is a theoretically-grounded, skills-based program that provides students the chance to deepen their understanding of communication as learned in their Major and build communication expertise that sets them up for success in their field and beyond.
The Minor helps students gain confidence with writing and communication in their own disciplines and in other academic, professional, cultural, and public contexts. Students learn foundational principles of writing and communication and apply their learning to reach new audiences, use different communication technologies and forms, and shape, share, and transform knowledge across diverse communities and ways of knowing.
The Minor is open to all UBC undergraduate students in degree programs that allow students to complete a minor in the Faculty of Arts. Students may declare a Minor in Writing and Communication upon attaining Year 2 Class standing (see Promotion Requirements).

Program Requirements
The Minor consists of 21 credits, of which 18 credits must be at the 300-level or above:
Lower-Level Requirements (3 credits)
- WRDS_V 200 (3) Writing and Communication Foundations
Upper-Level Requirements (9 credits)
- WRDS_V 400 (3) Writing and Communication Capstone
- 6 credits of 300- or 400-level WRDS_V courses (from the List of Courses, below)
Upper-Level Requirements (9 credits)
- 9 credits of 300- or 400-level courses (from the List of Courses, below) that explore the writing and communication practices used in specific communities or contexts to make knowledge, with an emphasis on academic, professional, and public contexts.
