The School of Journalism, Writing, and Media (JWAM) is a dynamic hub for innovative research and teaching in journalism, media, writing and communication. It offers a range of programs and courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. Established in 2020, the School was formed by merging the UBC Graduate School of Journalism, founded in 1998, with the Arts Studies in Research and Writing program, formed in 2008-09.
At the graduate level, JWAM offers a two-year Master of Journalism program.
For undergraduate students, the School provides courses that fulfill academic writing or communication requirements for students across all UBC faculties, as well as a range of Writing Studies and Journalism electives.
In addition, JWAM offers two undergraduate Minor programs. The Journalism and Social Change Minor equips students with foundational knowledge in journalism skills, critical thinking, analytical news literacy, relationship-building and ethics. The Minor in Writing and Communications provides students with a program that focuses on writing and communication practices used to make knowledge, share knowledge, and mobilize knowledge within and across academic disciplines, professional, and public contexts.
